The demonstrations came exactly a month after violent protests forced Mr Wade withdrawing proposals for electoral reform.
The site of the protest by the opposition was changed at the last minute.
Had been due to take place in the independence square in central Dakar, which is near the Presidential Palace, but earlier this week the Government banned meetings in the main squares of the city and roads.
The June 23 opposition movement was formed after nationwide protests last month - more violent protests by the rule of 11 years of Mr Wade.
Mr Wade led to abandon its plans to reduce the proportion of votes needed to win the presidential election to avoid a second round of more than 50% to 25%.
I had also wanted to create an elected position of Vice President.
Mr Wade critics accused of planning to use the new post to hand over power to his son, now a powerful Minister.
Both men have denied the claims.
Mr Wade, a veteran opponent, for the first time to power in democratic elections in 2000.
