Hamilton beat Alonso in the thriller in German GP

Lewis Hamilton of McLaren won an exciting GP of Germany with a feisty unit in a circuit of Nurburgring cold to move into third place in the Championship.

Hamilton jumped Red Bull of Mark Webber at the start of the initiative, lost and recovered prior to hitting a Ferrari Fernando Alonso and Webber to the line.

A bug planted Unit saw Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull finished in fourth place, but his leadership of the Championship is still 77 points.

Jenson Button's McLaren retired from the second race in a row.

A round classification aggressive had won Hamilton, second on the grid behind Webber and 26 years old handed more of it when it counted most.

A second win of the season - and his 16 victory of career - leaves Hamilton 82 points behind Vettel with nine races left to go.

Hamilton was held at his pit-to-car radio: "great work guys, great job." "Keep pushing, these are the results we get, it's amazing".

The 2008 World Champion jumped pole-sitter Webber at the start to take the initiative and although the Australian you passed a few laps later, Hamilton uses the sequence of sliding of the Toro red back to take the initiative.

The first round of stops saw Webber make a more decisive move as he faced in the first place on lap 14 and while Hamilton, Alonso and Vettel battled for position of pit lane two laps later Webber supremely departed to head.

An intense battle followed less than two seconds to Webber, Hamilton and Alonso. But Vettel, who had spun on the wet track, fell from the lead pack.

The second stop for new soft tyres saw another dramatic switch of position to Webber again facing first followed in the next two laps by Hamilton and Alonso.

Hamilton moved to the head, slightly push the way Webber as the Australian tried to defend their lead, but Alonso moved to the front on his way out of the pits.

The Asturian lead did not last long, because that Hamilton led around the Ferrari on the outside back in first place.

"Hamilton is incredible," said the commentator on the BBC's F1 David Coulthard. "It is in permanent attack mode and there is no love lost between him and Alonso not".

There was every chance the pilots closely matched trio could have exchanged positions in an obligatory stop for tyres hard in the final 10 laps.

But Hamilton, who arrived in the first, held to take his first victory since Grand Prix in April, China ahead of Alonso and Webber.

As button retired from the second race running contrasting fortunes were on the other side of the McLaren garage.

2009 Champion had been working its way through the field with a two stop strategy after slipping to 10 after a bad start.

But his return was interrupted when the team of this button to return the car to the garage just after the brand midway due to hydraulic problems.

"I had a terrible first round but then the pace was good and I was looking quite exciting," said button, who is fifth in the World Championship.

The reigning world champion was able to move from Ferrari's Felipe Massa in his final stop on the penultimate lap to win the fourth.

"He seems only seated and confidence will - and the magic ingredient," said Coulthard.
