"I don't want to dwell on the past and my role in it - I want to focus on is reforming the system of competition and removals, as it applies to the media, so have a healthier, more plural system in the future".

Also said that there was a "big question" on whether News Corporation is a company "adequate and appropriate" to maintain its current 39% stake in BSkyB - but that was a matter of Ofcom to decide, not political. On Thursday Deputy PM Nick Clegg said that Ofcom must take "very seriously" the matter.

'In touch'

On the question of the debt crisis of the Greece - which this week saw a new rescue package to try to shore up its economy and calming financial markets in the euro zone leaders agree - Mr Cable said that there had been a "big step forward" but had not resolved the main issues.

But he referred to efforts stagnant in the Congress to approve a plan to raise the ceiling of the debt of United States - designed to avoid a debt default.

Mr cable said: "the irony of the situation at the moment, with markets open tomorrow morning, is that the greatest threat to the global financial system comes from a few nutters of right in the U.S. Congress, rather than the euro area".

But was criticized by the Conservative MP Peter kept bone.

"Have a different system in America, where Governments may not pass what they like," said Mr bone.

"This is an excellent review." I personally support a similar limit where you have to go back every year and get extra authorized debt.

"To call them right nutters show how out of touch Vince Cable is with ordinary people in this country."
