London Cabbies are being given fancy silk handbags, feedback "guest books" and a bleeper to stop them revving their engines remaining in a move to turn them into green Ambassadors to combat climate change.

The Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts (RSA) has helped establish an ambitious and unusual trial that already has encouraged taxi drivers to reduce fuel consumption by 12% in the first two weeks.

The silk purses are intended to remind cabbies drive "gently" while books of visits are to evaluate your driving style and trigger debate with passengers about the advantages to the purse and the planet, saving fuel, says RSA.

The "Spring-o-meter" is a device mounted on the dashboard that wobbles and sounds an audible alarm if the driver brakes too hard or accelerates very aggressively, according to Jamie Young, a researcher at the Royal Society about the project.

"We chose cabbies on purpose because they are stereoyped by critics as cynical and set in their ways and so are a group relatively difficult to influence and who tend to think the high cost of fuel only comes with the job," he said.

"But they are also informal opinion formers because they come in contact with a large number of people so that they can influence others ... We look forward to extend these tests to the outside and Yes, ' man in white-van ' could come next, "Young added.

RSA, which is conducting the smartest Cab Drivers to study along with the Shell oil company, says it expects the savings of 15% at the time of the national study of taxi drivers is wounded up in over two weeks.

If continued over one year, taxi drivers could each be online to save £ 600 per year, or the equivalent of 200 kg of carbon, in the case of a new diesel car, says that the Royal Society.

Young says there could be a huge impact on global C02 emissions from Britain if the country's drivers could be encouraged to take the step relatively simple driving different.

"We are pleased to see our taxi drivers smarter doing so well as they bid to improve their driving behavior, and we hope that this campaign can show everyone how quickly you can become a smarter, more efficient-and save money in the process," he said.

Silk purses and other specially designed "rings" are considered more effective than just endless verbal or written messages to slow down and generate more carefully.

RSA and Shell spoke at length to taxi drivers that motivates them. A typical response of an unnamed cabby was this: "we all know how to drive fuel efficiently ... I would happily go along Broadway in 40 mph while taxis not overtaking me 60 mph so that I'm 20 places back in the queue at the airport. "
